Disciplines:

Artist’s Statement:
I see the theatre as a laboratory for investigating what it means to be human. It is a site for exploring broad, “universal” aspects of our existence as well as particular cultural contexts that impact contemporary life. My work as an artist encompasses each of those dimensions. Some of the projects I undertake seek to challenge societal norms by provoking critical thought. Some seek to affirm a “humanist” perspective by engaging the emotions. Some do both. In all my theatrical activity -- as playwright, director, dramaturg, or performer -- I strive to expand the boundaries of the art form, enhance our understanding of the world, and empower the human spirit. Through collaboration and communion with my fellow artists and audience members, I hope to redefine the theatre experience in a way that stimulates mutual desire to collectively redefine our shared existence.

Disciplines:
Visual Arts

Artist’s Statement:
II'm a scientist (a freshwater ecologist) by profession and an artist by compulsion.

My understanding of the natural world is part of who I am and inevitably informs my art: the contrasts of order vs entropy / change vs stasis / defined vs evanescent / simplicity vs complexity. The tensions between these opposing states are what intrigue me, both in what I see outside in the world and what happens in my studio. It's all endlessly fascinating.

My work can be seen at the Center for the Arts and at various galleries in the area.

Jewelry

Artist’s Statement:
I started designing Jewelry in 2005 after a life altering injury. Jewelry became a "theraputic addiction" and the instant gratification was wearing the finished piece. Unknowingly, I became a mobile art gallery advertising my own jewelry pieces. My venue being the audience of 'anywhere' I went, getting complimentary attention for my designs. It was my reinforcement to persist and continue. From there I began the journey of self discovery and healing through my work.

Disciplines:

Artist’s Statement:
While not always the case, generally I don’t have any lofty ideals or messages I want to convey when I make a piece of art. Sure there are some pieces that obviously state something but that’s all secondary to me. I’m more interested in the processes that must be gone through to get to that finished piece. Picnic jugs were not designed to securely connect to vacuum cleaner hoses in a sturdy yet also aesthetic manner. That is the challenge I enjoy. The problem solving aspect and satisfaction of making something out of nothing are the biggest factors in my works. To take raw materials that are worth little to nothing and manipulate them into something that people appreciate is the basis behind what I do. If in the end the piece makes some sort of statement also then that’s just an added welcome benefit to me.

Artist’s Statement:
It is important to me that my work challenges and / or entertains the viewer. I do this through the use of dark humor, social commentary and under-considered beauty. My desire is to blur the line between what we see and what we don’t see; what we know and what we don’t know; and what is natural and what is unnatural.

Artist’s Statement:
I have painted from life for over 30 years.  My focus is the discovery process of seeing and interpreting something new in what appears to be ordinary. Still life and portrait painting have offered me aesthetic challenges and opportunities that range from the pure exploration of light, color, pattern and texture to the creation of work that has more complex personal iconography.

Artist’s Statement:
My work populates an individual perspective of spirituality. Experiencing spirit is finding unity and wholeness in something. My center is moving slowly and my outer edges are moving brilliantly. The space in my art works contains a pregnant possibility of everything. The images do not represent an explosion but a space that evolves. Empty space is alive and procreative. When I create a piece, I am inside the space and looking out.  I create space in a certain sequence to represent mass. Sequentially making choices influenced by consciousness and state of being.

Raised in NYC by an art and theater journalist, I have been designated as a "Folk Artist" by Herbert Hemphill, one of the founders of the American Folk Art Museum in New York City. I have over the years been a crafts artist/designer and a writer, as well as a performance artist; I've studied at Brooklyn College, Crafts Students League NYC, Nova Scotia College of Art & Design, and exhibited at Museum of American Folk Arts and Yeshiva University Museum NYC. Embracing Pittsburgh as my home, I have finally joined all these arts into PUPPETRY! I studied with internationally acclaimed puppeteers Eric Bass and Ines Zeller Bass of The Sandglass Theater of Vermont, and have had counsel and direction from Gretl Aicher, artistic director of The Salzberg Marionettes.

I write/produce & perform original puppet theater--some for adults --some, for children plus adults. I use the name "LALKA Theater * puppets! " My work has included original avant-garde music (composed by Amnon Freidlin of Normal Love). My performances are often multi-lingual, and promote diversity. A member of both UNIMA USA (Union Internationale de la Marionette) as well as Puppeteers of America, I have performed for the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust at gallery crawls, and, for the International Children's Theater of Pittsburgh at First Night 2009. I am also embarking on a project which will include the participation of the public. See: InterFacePittsburgh.com

Artist’s Statement:
My work is about the search for the infinite. For the past several years, I’ve concentrated my efforts toward creating modern minimalist sculpture with some timeless quality–clean lines and surfaces blended to create constant movement and balance within the occupied space. Infused with this concept of continuous motion, the designs neither begin nor end. "Powerful in their reflection of surroundings and in their sublime and clean geometric volumes..." Mariana Bego, Ezair Gallery, NYC. "The polished surfaces of many of his sculptures blur the borders of matter and its surrounding environment. The viewer is left wondering which aspect is visual and which is physical. Thus each piece, at once autonomous and boundless, has a dialectical relationship with its setting. It is in this way that Mr. Stallings’ minimalist approach to abstraction continuously proves itself to be among the most engaging and effective sculpture available today."
