Cultural Policy and Research

The Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council's Cultural Policy and Research department works to promote the arts in the Pittsburgh region and beyond by educating the entire community about issues that affect the cultural sector on the local, state and national levels. We use input from those we serve to regularly update our cultural policy priorities, inform the creation of policy platforms and guide our research objectives.

Advocacy
The Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council is dedicated to advocating on behalf of the local arts and cultural community. We work to keep that community informed of relevant information and engaged in opportunities to make their voices heard by policy makers on the local, state and national levels.

Research & Resources
To assist you in making your own case for arts and culture, the Arts Council has assembled a variety of research, tools and links to informational resources.

Economy
As the nonprofit sector struggles with the recession, the Arts Council has compiled the following list of resources, strategies and articles to help the local cultural community to deal with the situation.

Cultural Policy Priorities
Each year the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council's Advocacy Committee of the board of directors identifies a preliminary list of cultural policy priorities for the programming year. Members of the cultural community meet to discuss the proposed priorities. Our current Cultural Policy Priorities are as follows:

Raise public awareness of the need for increased individual giving to the arts in Pittsburgh.
Demonstrate Pittsburgh's leadership in the arts and promote the image of the region with a "seat at the table" with key constituent groups by:
  > Maintaining a strong focus on the arts and culture for community wide activities.
  > Continuing to promote the inclusion of arts advocates on key boards, authorities and commissions in Western Pennsylvania and statewide.
  > Supporting the increase of state and local cultural tourism funding for Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania.
  > Continuing to participate in state and national Arts Advocacy efforts and other national events and conferences.
Work closely with the ARAD board to maintain and increase the arts' share of RAD funding.
Continue to work with the Mayor's and the County Executive's offices on articulating arts agendas for the city and the county.
Develop partnerships with other research organizations to develop a collection of data that will advance the Arts Council's efforts.
Encourage the advancement of arts education in the region and work in partnership with other entities.
