With
the high price of gasoline, nonprofit organizations that
rely on volunteers are facing a critical shortage in help.
Due to an outdated tax law, many people, who use their
own cars for charitable service, can no longer afford
to volunteer. |

|
| |
The
IRS recently raised the standard business mileage rate
to 58.5 cents per mile to reflect the true cost of driving.
Yet the mileage rate for volunteers, who use their own
vehicle for 501(c)(3) nonprofit service, did not increase.
The volunteer mileage rate has remained fixed by law at
14 cents for over 10 years. |

There
is a solution! Legislation is pending in Congress to raise
the volunteer mileage rate to the rate that businesses
can deduct (currently 58.5 cents). The Charitable Mileage
Deduction Equity Act, S.3421 by Senator Bob Casey (D-PA)
and H.R.2020 by Congressman Todd Platts (R-19-PA) would
set the volunteer mileage rate at the business mileage
rate. |

Act
Now! Citizens for the Arts in Pennsylvania has joined
forces with the Pennsylvania Association of Nonprofit
Organizations (PANO) in a coalition with Senator Casey,
Congressman Platts and dozens of Pennsylvania organizations
to raise the volunteer mileage rate to 100% of the business
rate. This issue is a priority for the nonprofit sector,
and we have worked toward moving legislation forward in
Congress. But when Congress returns in September, we will
have only three weeks to pass legislation in both the
House and the Senate. So much work remains and we need
your help.
