Artist Jenny
Holzer revealed her new site specific artwork, For Pittsburgh
and presented a lecture concerning the work. The free lecture
was sponsored by the Office of Public Art and the Pittsburgh Sports
and Exhibition Authority.
For
Pittsburgh is monumental in its physical scale and in
its ambition to give public presence to books most commonly read
in private. The three books that will scroll on the lighting system
tell stories about Pittsburgh taken from the personal experiences
of the authors. The books are: An American Childhood by Annie
Dillard, Homewood Trilogy (Sent for You Yesterday, Hiding Place,
and Damballah) by John Edgar Wideman and Out of this Furnace by
Thomas Bell.
Over time,
books will be added to the collection, creating another form of
public library for Pittsburgh, available for viewing on the city's
skyline. Books will scroll twenty-four hours a day, seven days
a week. Optimum legibility of the texts occurs on the Convention
Center's terrace.
